AUGUST ISSUE              VOL 6 NO. 7

Greetings Asian American Times readers. I hope you have all enjoyed your summer and maybe even taken part of some vacation relaxation. But whether you just got back in town or have simply been enjoying the local California weather, I am sure you are ready for our latest issue. As usual we strive to cover a broad range of useful topics, from high technology to social issues, from education to medicine, and from immigration to global focuses.

In this issue you will find our regular column, the “Business Toolbox,” where we present 10 Keys to Business Success. Whether you are an up-and-coming entrepreneur or an established business person, you can build or check your business acumen here.

And with school now starting up, the “Facts & Figures” column takes you through many interesting statistics associated with the return to classrooms by our nation’s students and teachers. For example, did you know that 38% of all college students are 25 years or older? It is never too late to expand your education.

With the immigration topic so prevalent in the news, we felt it appropriate to interview an attorney who’s informative and detailed legal articles you have seen in our past issues. In “You and the Law,” Attorney German Castillo gives us his views on immigration and what he can bring to this often controversial, but always present, arena.

In this issue, you will find articles on Vietnam and China . These countries bear a close look, since Vietnam has manufacturers flocking to its door step, while China is the world’s most populous country and the fastest growing world economy.

Asian American Times always takes special interest in technology. Therefore, you will find that this month that we are profiling Bill Watkins, President and CEO of Seagate Technology. In a competitive economy, where not too long ago we witnessed the implosion of many technology businesses, it is heartening to see a technology leader build success on promoting team work and quality. The stock market rewards layoffs and cutbacks, but there are those with vision of the bigger picture. Because of its infrastructure investments, today Seagate is at the top of the data storage industry.

Of course, our Cover Story is on the “Young Asian American Inventors” who have contributed to advances in technology. Each year the Massachusetts Institute of Technology “Technology Review” magazine lists the leading 100 researchers under the age of 35. We highlight those in that list who are Asian American.

On page 20 you will find an article on Dr. Sehat Sutardja who was named “Inventor of the Year” by the Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association. Beginning at page 22 you will find some highly informative and technical articles on the subject of hard disk drives.

In our regular health column we present the important Alzheimer’s research work of Professor Li-Huei Tsai, who joined MIT this spring as Picower Professor of Neuroscience.

Finally, in our “Community News” section, beginning at page 32, you will find how Dr. Yuet Wai Kan has earned a Lifetime Achievement Award for his pioneering work in genetics at the University of California, San Francisco. In that section you can also read about how $400 Billion in buying power makes Asian Americans the most affluent consumer group, about the 2006 SAJA Journalism Awards, and about how Asian American youth are increasingly setting the trends in U.S. pop culture.

As you can see, we have a long issue that we hope will be of interest to most readers. But, please give us your feedback on what other topics you would like to see.
